Preventive Care

Preventive care is one of the most important elements of dentistry. It begins with a regularly scheduled dental prophylaxis. Prophylaxis means "to guard or prevent." During these appointments our professionally trained hygiene staff removes tartar and plaque in order to help prevent gum disease, bad breath, tooth decay, and other health problems. Our hygienists also apply extended release fluoride, take x-rays to detect problems early, measure gum tissue for recession and educate patients on oral disease prevention. Part of a preventive appointment also includes thorough examination by our dentist to diagnose any problems and recommend treatment.

Another aspect of preventive care, that we highly recommend, is the placement of sealants to newly erupted, permanent teeth. Dental sealants are a safe plastic-like material that is painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars) and acts as a physical barrier to help “seal out” germs and food that cause tooth decay. Because sealants are such an effective tool in the prevention of cavities, they can prevent the need for both mild and, eventually, more extensive dental restorations.
